I hate the word “work,” but most people don’t understand what I mean when I talk about my professional play.
Nearly 10% of the population has ADHD. This means that most people have a friend, relative, coworker, client, student- someone in their life with ADHD. But most people don’t know what this really means.
Anyone can look up the diagnostic symptoms of ADHD, but this gives you little understanding of what ADHD really is.
My mission is to create a global understanding of what ADHD actually is. To eliminate the stigma and elevate those living with ADHD to meet their potential.
ADHD impacts individuals, families, businesses, and communities- in terms of both challenges and opportunities. The challenges of ADHD are a reality. But they are not the whole picture. When someone with ADHD learns how to manage their brain optimally, they have the potential to be a superstar in any setting. Brain management is not just about taking a pill- though that can be part of it. Supporting the people in our lives with ADHD is not just about helping them deal with challenges- the ultimate goal is supporting them to be their ideal selves – with ADHD.
Trained as both a psychologist and coach, I have a Mary Poppins style carpet bag of tips, strategies, and tools to work with clients individually or in a group format. That said, my belief is that clients have the inherent ability to make changes, achieve their goals, and lead a happy and successful life – with ADHD.
Dr. Milliken works with individuals who experience Executive Skills Deficits, including challenges with planning, self-management, organization, staying on task, meeting deadlines, problem-solving, time management, collaboration, memory and managing emotions. While there are many reasons why someone may struggle in any one of these areas, the presence of a number of them over a lifetime may be indicative of ADHD. Diagnosed or not, Dr. Milliken can partner with you as your attention coach to overcome barriers and build on your natural strengths to reach your vision of success.
As your coach, I will partner with you to:
- Understand your unique ADHD profile
- Identify and learn how to capitalize on your natural abilities
- Overcome internal and external obstacles
- Learn to prioritize
- Manage “stuckness” in emotions, thinking and behavior
- Create structures and organization that work for you
- Improve time management skills
- Improve personal habits, such as exercise and nutrition
- Set up a more efficient environment based on your work profile
- Keep focused on achieving ultimate success while having fun!
The Difference Between Coaching and Therapy
Many of my clients come to me having an idea of what therapy or counseling is, but not really knowing how coaching is different. The first difference is that I do not “DO” therapy with my clients. Coaching is a present and future oriented process that is focused on developing insight, action and forward momentum towards goals. Often in therapy clients are revisiting aspects of their past to “understand” themselves and their habits. One of the biggest reasons that I use coaching strategies rather than a therapy model with my clients is that I love witnessing my clients achieving their vision of their life, rather than just talking about it.
In therapy, the relationship is typically contained in the session and there is little contact between sessions. As a coach, I often have contact with my clients between through email, phone or texts to communicate about their successes or problem solve around challenges.
My clients have amazing creativity and positive intentions. They have ideas that can change the world, their community, their family, their situation and themselves. Supporting them to have their intentions become reality is my role as a coach.
Coaching in-person or by telephone or webcast
My coaching clients live and work across the country and abroad. Coaching by telephone or webcast is both convenient and effective. It offers intimacy, practicality, and focus. It also becomes an effective magnifier of what is being said and of what is not being said.
LIVE! and IN PERSON!!!
Clients who live and work close to Portland Maine may choose to come to the office for coaching sessions. Some clients who live near, but not conveniently near, come for an initial visit after which we work together by telephone. I have not had the pleasure of meeting most of my clients in person, but this does not impede the synergy of our working together or our ability to build trust.

The topic and learning about all aspects of ADHD and related issues is serious. But learning about this doesn’t have to be. Telling stories, engaging in enjoyable conversations, being active, and having fun are incorporated into everything I do professionally and personally. My goal for our collaboration is that you leave having learned new tactics to living a fully expressed life impacting those around you just as much as yourself.
As a student it was torture for me to write. It’s ironic that as an adult this has become one of my favorite ways to play-especially in my professional life. My folder of topics is constantly growing. Thanks to my ADHD brain, I pay attention to a lot of information and am constantly making new discoveries and having new ideas I can’t wait to share in person or through my writing.
On April Fool’s Day 2016 (April 1st, if you did not know!) I released my first book, PlayDHD. With the support of an incredible illustrator and graphics genius, Morgan Pickard, and a book coach, Jeff Zupancic, I created a fun, ADHD- friendly (you know what this means!), book about the connection between play and managing ADHD. I actually had a ball creating this.
In the past 20 years I have been writing for a variety of print and online publications. Follow this path down this rabbit hole to see the specifics.
I have written numerous long and short articles about ADHD. My writing in this area has been from the perspectives of a psychologist, coach, mom, adult with ADHD, corporate consultant, and all-around guru! I have also written about related topics, such as other specific learning differences, mood disorders, time management, parenting an ADHD child, living as a couple with ADHD…. What I want to convey is that I an knowledgeable and think about ADHD, and everything related to it, from a multitude (notice the big words I know how to use!) of perspectives. And I LOVE to write!
